Nursing Background Inspires My Insurance Career

PHOTO-2025-05-17-01-51-55

When people ask how I got into insurance, the answer usually surprises them. I didn’t grow up thinking I’d one day work in this industry, but I’ve always known I wanted to care for people. My journey started in healthcare, where I spent years supporting patients and their families through some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

My path to nursing began early. Even in high school, I felt drawn to the medical field. But that calling deepened when my mom was diagnosed with brain cancer while I was in college. We spent her final months together at home with hospice care. Being by her side during that time wasn’t just meaningful—it was life-changing. Her strength, the compassion of the nurses, and that entire experience inspired me to step into hospice nursing right after graduation.

After graduation, I spent the next three years working in hospice, supporting families through some of their most vulnerable moments. Eventually, I pursued my nurse practitioner degree and transitioned into primary care. I loved it. I loved educating families, being a calm presence, and showing up for people where they needed me most. For years, I worked in memory care and assisted living settings, supporting patients and communicating closely with their families. It was deeply fulfilling work, and it gave me a strong foundation in trust, listening, and clear communication.

Then in 2020, as healthcare shifted during the pandemic, I found myself navigating a new reality. I was seeing patients remotely, often through a screen, and missing the human connection that had always been the heart of my work. At the same time, I felt a pull toward something new—something where I could still care for people, just in a different way. That’s when I made the decision to join Chris in building The Mitchell Insurance Group.

It was new. It was different. But I saw how I could bring the same skills I’d used in nursing into this work. For a while, I did both—splitting time between primary care and the agency—but eventually, I knew it was time to fully commit. Letting go of my identity as a nurse wasn’t easy. I worked with a business coach to navigate the transition. But once I stepped in fully, I saw how much value I could bring to this role, especially in supporting families with clarity, warmth, and confidence.

And here’s the thing: I still care for people, just in a different way.

The skills I carry from nursing still guide me every day:

Education: Helping clients understand their policies, line by line.

Communication: Making complex terms feel simple and approachable.

Accuracy: Paying attention to the details that matter.

Documentation: Keeping thorough records of our conversations.

Organization: Ensuring every step flows smoothly.

Hard Conversations: Navigating challenging moments with empathy.

I often think about the parallels between my two careers. In both, people come to you when something important is at stake. They’re looking for someone who will listen, explain their options, and give them confidence in their next step.

That’s what I strive to do—every day—in this business.

Today, I’m proud to work alongside Chris and our amazing team. I’m grateful for the flexibility this role gives me to show up for my family, and I’m energized by the clients we serve. Our mission at The Mitchell Insurance Group is to deliver thoughtful, tailored protection that meets real-life needs. That mission is built on care, communication, and integrity—and I’m honored to bring a little of my nursing heart into every policy we place.

If you’re new here, I’d love to meet you. Let’s talk about what matters most to you and how we can help you protect it.
